WELCOME TO HARMONY IN HEALTH

What?
We look at health through the prism of harmony; the cyclical nature of life, interconnectedness and interdependence, diversity, the oneness of everything. Harmony in Health connects natural approaches with modern ideas that are in conformity with Nature and enhance its healing aspects, aiming to restore balance in a human being.

Why?
Healthcare services are at their limit. Modern Medicine is primarily concerned with the treatment of illness - once it occurs - rather than seeking to maintain health. It does not define health other than as the absence of disease or by referencing a few markers such as body mass index, cholesterol levels or blood pressure. Yet certain traditional systems of medicine and many mind-body disciplines do understand health in terms of a balanced relationship between the different systems and functions of the organism. There is great potential in helping people to make use of the many different disciplines to cultivate and maintain their own health.

How?

We can find a new way of looking at health, and a new vocabulary of health based on the principles of harmony. A more balanced, harmonious state of health can be brought about by drawing on natural systems of medicine, mind-body practices from East and West, and an increased focus on everyday factors that promote wellbeing.

Join Us!
We want to grow a team of experts to increase awareness of harmony in health ideas and bring them into the community in a practical way.

What is Harmony in Health?

Harmony in Health is a new initiative from the College of Medicine and Integrated Health. It explores certain principles of harmony and how they can be applied in a practical way to promoting health and wellbeing, drawing on ancient wisdom and modern disciplines from East and West.

Harmony in health means:
  • Cultivating and maintaining health rather than focusing on diagnosing and trying to cure disease
  • Gentle compassionate and natural interventions that nurture the whole 'environment' in a person, and enhance natural rhythms, rather than interventions that are imposed mechanically and one-dimensionally - regardless of consequences
  • Promoting interaction between and balance of mind, body and spirit

Harmony in Health is part of The Harmony Project, which takes its inspiration from HRH The Prince of Wales’ vision, set out in his book ‘Harmony: A new way of looking at our world’. This vision shows us that, by turning to Nature as our teacher, we are better placed to tackle the challenges facing humankind.

Why is Harmony in Health important?

People are no longer satisfied to just “take a tablet”. Many of us are starting to understand that health is in the mind, body and our emotions. It depends on and is influenced by our social activities or isolation, nature, our local environment, and other things such as a personal philosophy or spiritual search. One dimensional ‘hard’ medicine can often disrupt the natural balance in people and lead to further problems. We need to open this discussion further and include everyone. We all need to come together, learn, share and connect. Our harmony depends on it.

The Pythagorean principle says that health depends on the harmony of man or woman’s elemental components and that disease is caused by disturbance of this harmony.

By moving the focus towards harmony and balance in health rather than just the treatment of disease, we embrace a wider view, connect to the power of wisdom traditions and allow other disciplines to get involved in creating health and balance.

Bringing About  Harmony in Health

Most traditional systems of medicine were based on the principle that disease is the result of imbalance - a lack of harmony within the organism. The aim was to restore harmony so that Nature could take its course and support healing.

Some well-known ancient systems of medicine are:
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine
  • The teachings of Hippocrates and Galen
  • Ayurveda
  • Humoral Medicine and Unani Tibb

Many modern disciplines are based on similar principles, in particular the need to cooperate with the natural rhythms and interactions between mind, body, emotions and spirit.

Better known practices from East and West are:
  • T'ai chi ch'uan
  • Qi Gong
  • Yoga
  • Reiki
  • Alexander Technique
  • Feldenkrais
  • Somatic Practices
  • Dance & Movement (5 Rhythms, Authentic Movement, Sacred Dance, etc.)

Other factors which promote harmony in health are:
  • Good nutrition
  • Contact with Nature
  • Fresh air
  • Natural exercise
  • Harmonious relationships
  • Harmonious environment at home and at work
  • Meditation
  • Art and music
We intend to focus on how certain Principles of Harmony - e.g. Balance, Respecting Nature - are being and can be applied to health and wellbeing today.

We will research, collate and communicate ancient and more modem ideas around harmony in health and make these ideas accessible to more people.

We will give people experience of these ideas, help them benefit from them in their everyday lives, becoming more knowledgeable about - and taking more responsibility for -
their own health and wellbeing.

Respecting the principle of Diversity, we will be inclusive of many disciplines contributing to health rather than promoting one or two.
